The information behaviours of disadvantaged young first-time mothers

Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore the information behaviours socioeconomically disadvantaged young first-time mothers, an understudied and at-risk group (health well-being). Design/methodology/approach Questionnaire semi-structured interviews with 39 mothers (aged up 25 years age) from UK areas multiple deprivations. Findings Our participants' preferred sources are interpersonal which they have formed close supportive relationships. Support groups important connection, but reluctant attend involving older mothers. With exception support staff health visitors, institutional professional used very little. Societal stigma a significant issue influencing behaviours, issues bureaucracy, overload, conflicting practical access also reported. A further key factor behaviour self-identity. Research limitations/implications should not be considered representative as whole all disadvantaged. As our participants identified ethnically white, findings cannot speak additional barriers experienced by women colour. Further studies population recommended.
